Lorraine Palardy, directrice générale de l’organisme Les Impatients, et le commissaire Eric Mattson ont le plaisir de vous inviter à l’exposition Géométries patientes et molles.

Artistes : Étienne O’Leary, Mathieu Beauséjour, Marie-Claude Bouthillier, Michel Brabant, Pierre Dorion, Raymond Dumont, Jean-Paul Houle, Stéphane La Rue, Michel Laplante, Jean-François Lauda, Salvatore Marino, Bill Market, Stéphane Martin, Louis Valentine et Larry Vick.

Du 19 avril au 18 mai 2012 à la Galerie des Impatients (100, rue Sherbrooke est, 4e étage).

L’objet de cette exposition n’est pas de retracer l’évolution de la géométrie à travers quelques grandes civilisations comme les Babyloniens et les Égyptiens (3000 à 330 avant JC) depuis l’Antiquité, mais plutôt de constater de quelle manière les mathématiques et plus précisément la géométrie ont évolué et sont exploitées dans le monde de l’art actuel.

Cette étude tente d’exposer une notion d’héritage entre la géométrie antique, de sa création aux Grecs, et la géométrie contemporaine. Lors de ses applications artistiques, elle nous confronte à de nouvelles représentations qui rafraîchissent les recherches les plus récentes : géometries fractales, hyperboliques, à n dimension et non euclidiennes.

Notre enquête s’est concentrée sur des artistes et des Impatients qui modélisent le monde de façon singulière. Leurs recherches nous gratifient de nouveaux axiomes et postulats regroupés sous le nom Géométries patientes et molles.

Grâce à des informations recueillies auprès d’une équipe de professionnels, art thérapeutes et animateurs, et s’appuyant sur une kyrielle d’études en géométrie contemporaine, le commissaire Eric Mattson a extrait de la Collection des Impatients des dossiers singuliers pouvant apporter des développements majeurs à l’étude.

Cinq artistes en art actuel ont été invités à étudier cette masse d’informations. En associant leurs explorations empreintes de rigueur mathématique à celles de onze Impatients, choisies pour des raisons explicites – recherches structurelles, acharnement dans la répétition, exploration des masses – les artistes géomètres et le commissaire ont tenté de clarifier cette percée révolutionnaire.

Cette exposition majeure d’œuvres en communication étroite les unes avec les autres, que le spectateur pourra parcourir, éclaire donc de tous ses feux l’arrivée tant attendue des Géométries patientes et molles, la plus grande évolution dans ce domaine depuis le théorème de Pythagore.

Le 6 février 1976, des membres de l’Orchestre expérimental de Montréal se sont réunis à l’église St-John the Evangelist dans le but de présenter un concert intitulé Sun in Aquarius, Moon in Taurus. Cet orchestre comprenait des membres ayant fait partie de l’Atelier de musique expérimentale (1973-1975). Yves Bouliane, membre fondateur de cette organisation, a aussi oeuvré au sein du Jazz libre du Québec au début de la décennie des années 70.

On February 6, 1976, members of the Montreal Experimental Orchestra presented a concert entitled Sun in Aquarius, Moon in Taurus. The event took place at St-John the Evangelist church. It featured former members of the Atelier de musique expérimentale (1973-1975), including Yves Bouliane who played with the Jazz libre du Québec for a short period of time in 1972 and 1973.

The following interview was conducted by Étienne O’Leary’s sister on December 28, 2002. Additional details were provided on February 8, 2004.

Véronique O’Leary [V.O.]: What prompted you to become a filmmaker?

Étienne O’Leary [E.O.]: For as long as I can remember, our father always had a camera in his hands. In 1964, he lent me his Beaulieu – I now had a camera with which to document winter sports. I made a short film . . . but I did not show it to anybody. I then worked on Day Tripper – a black and white film that lasted approximately 15 minutes. I began work on this project in 1965. [Vsevolod] Pudovkin would say: “Take two or three shots of a person standing still. With these images and rhythm we will create movement.” You need more than one image to create movement. It all started with photography – I had a photo camera that I purchased in Venice. It was a good Russian camera. I had fun capturing images of the “Orient.” In Egypt, I used a Leika.

But then I became interested in German and American cinema.

I remember seeing The Lady from Shangai, The Blue Angel and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari which I really enjoyed. I also saw Nosferatu. I was already interested in Man Ray’s works. I had seen The Starfish and The Mysteries of the Chateau of Dice as well as [Luis] Bunuel’s Le chien andalou. I also remember attending a special screening of American films organized by Film Culture. In 1964, there was a retrospective of New York cinema and I saw Scorpio Rising and Twice a Man back to back. The colors were incredible. These productions made an impression on me. They prompted me to start making my own films.

I also remember staying for the full duration of Andy Warhol’s Sleep which was presented at the Cinémathèque. I was a really patient person. I kept telling myself: “Something will eventually appear on the screen . . . .”

[V.O.]: I remember that you spent a lot of time at both the Musée d’art moderne and the Cinémathèque. You also painted a lot back then.

[E.O.]: I started at school. I studied writing . . . and then I discovered [Wassily W.] Kandinsky – point, line to plane and Concerning the Spiritual in Art.

[V.O.]: By the time you turned 15 or 16, you were already interested in the works of [Karlheinz] Stockhausen and John Cage. How do you explain that? I remember that you listened to their music with much enthusiasm.

[E.O.]: There was the Domaine musical at the Odeon. At the Conservatory you could hear [Olivier] Messiaen. I remember attending a concert by Stockhausen.

[V.O.]: In 1968, you began to shoot in the streets of Paris?

[E.O.]: No, I showed my films in occupied faculties.

My films were shown in playhouses and movie theaters.

There was a Modern Art festival in Bordeaux. They showed one of Taylor Mead’s films. I think I had met him at Censier prior to the festival.

Day Tripper was presented during happenings organized by Jean-Jacques Lebel. Chromo Sud was shown in England. A friend of mine had brought the film over there. May Ray said that Day Tripper was a film he wished he had made. I was flattered.

[V.O.]: Tell me about the cinematographic language that characterizes your films?

[E.O.]: I experimented with in-camera editing. There was a function that allowed me to rewind images. It was therefore possible to do superimpositions – I did what we call flicker effects. There was an image, a photograph, a printed photograph; 2, 3 seconds. I did that with the image of a painting. I would shoot a few frames, leave a couple of unexposed frames, than film another 2, 3 or 4 seconds. In the unexposed frames, you could put another image and that would create movement . . . but not necessarily in a way that flowed or that was systematic. I was not a theoretician!

I think I did that in Day Tripper. I filmed Michèle Giraud walking on a sidewalk and our brother Denis driving the 4L . . . .

[V.O.]: How did you learn these tricks or ways of doing things?

[E.O.]: Dad’s cameraman at Radio-Canada – Gobet – showed me how to do that. He showed me how cameras functioned. Once I went with him to Europe to shoot a memorial that was taking place in Normandy for Canadian soldiers.

[V.O.]: How did you compose the soundtracks to Day Tripper, Homeo and Chromo Sud?

[E.O.]: I used a harmonium and a piano . . . once a drummer came with his kit. Mother was quite upset. We improvised. We also did music for a Chinese designer . . . for a show in New York. I can’t remember his name. Chan maybe.

[V.O.]: What would you like to tell the people who are going to see you films in 2004?

[E.O.]: It is always new. When you like an auteur or a person, it’s always new.

Cette œuvre non-didactique situe le Jazz libre dans son contexte sociopolitique et culturel. C’est un document unique et engageant qui mérite d’être vu et revu.
